 Where to Meet New People/Men

The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.

__Albert Einstein

I love quotes that hit home and make me think.  Ladies, we are all intelligent, wonderful, beautiful women.  When we’ve been hit with a life trauma, we sometimes start second-guessing our judgments—time for change.  Take control of your decisions; make new friends, engage in new activities, and work on yourself, whatever that might look like. The question is HOW now that you are on your own. Not easy.

When I got divorced, I had to change locations, change friends, and definitely change how I saw the world. Here are a few suggestions for meeting new people.

Neighbourhood: I asked my neighbours and looked on the Next Door app in my zip code for book clubs, game groups (e.g., Bunco, bridge, canasta), happy hour get-togethers, once-a-month lunch out, and a wine club. You get the idea.

Volunteering is a great place to meet like-minded people. For example, I met someone I dated for a few years when I volunteered for a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It was fun and an easy way to get to know him.

Church or Religious Groups: If faith is important, attending services or events can help you meet new people. If you have already tried a church, I suggest trying one in a different part of town.

Sports: If you’re athletic, there are several ways to meet new people. I asked my book club friends, and they got me involved in the local Community Center. I’m now playing Pickleball and Tennis. It wasn’t expensive to sign up, and I met a whole group of new people. My neighbourhood also has a walking group, a bike group, and twice-weekly yoga. You can join the YMCA closest to you or a gym with group classes.

Gyms & Fitness Classes: Most women go to yoga. Try a different gym from yours, hiking groups, or CrossFit gyms.

Bars & Lounges: If you enjoy going out, classy bars, breweries, or even coffee shops can be another easy way to meet people.

Dating Apps & Websites: Please read my blog “Buyer Beware”.

Social Media: I have joined several dating groups on Facebook. You can also try Instagram and LinkedIn. I am usually my girlfriend’s plus one to her company events. That’s the beauty of having many girlfriends.

Dog Walks and Parks: Pick different areas of town to walk your pooch. If you don’t have pets, no problem. The nearest shelter would let you walk one of their dogs.

Solo Travel & Group Trips: I see many solo cruises advertised on Facebook. I haven’t tried one, but if you don’t meet the love of your life, you at least see new parts of our beautiful world.

Cultural Events & Festivals: Concerts, art shows, and food festivals are good ideas.  I Google my city’s weekly events and can always find something fun to attend.

Oh my, I’ve gone on and on.  I bet my next question is “These are all good ideas, but how do I start a conversation with the stranger next to me?”
